Inside a Seven-Figure Custom Build: The Anatomy of a World-Class Shop
The shop does not advertise. There is no Instagram account, no trade show booth, no press kit. Their clients find them through other clients, and the waiting list runs to three years. When we visited, there were six cars in various stages of build — a 1963 split-window Corvette, two first-generation Camaros, a 1969 Dodge Charger, and two vehicles under cover that we were asked not to describe.
The owner has been building cars for thirty-one years. He started as a body man in his uncle's collision shop, learned to fabricate by watching and asking, and eventually opened a space of his own. His reputation was built one car at a time, through word of mouth, in a community where everyone knows what a bad weld looks like.
What separates a $400,000 build from a $40,000 one? The answer begins before metal is touched.
Engineering comes first. Every car this shop builds starts with a CAD model of the chassis modifications. Suspension geometry is calculated before any tube is bent. Brake bias is calculated before any caliper is sourced. The builder works with a suspension engineer on every project — not as a consultant, but as a collaborator who reviews every decision that affects how the car handles.
Fabrication is the second differentiator. The shop builds everything it possibly can in-house. Fuel tanks are fabricated from baffled aluminum sheet, not purchased from a catalog. Dashboard panels are formed on an English wheel and finished by hand. Every bracket, every tab, every gusset is cut, drilled, and welded by someone who has been doing it for at least ten years.
Finishing is where time disappears. The body man on the shop's current Camaro build has spent 340 hours on metalwork alone — straightening, shrinking, massaging panels to a standard that requires running your hand across every surface in a specific direction of light to evaluate. Paint is applied in a dedicated spray booth with controlled temperature and humidity. Blocking between coats is done by hand with a guide coat to reveal any remaining imperfection.
Assembly follows a sequence that has been refined over years. Every fastener is torqued to specification and marked. Every fluid connection is pressure-tested before the car moves. Every electrical circuit is tested individually.
The result, when it is done, is a car that could go back to a factory and be mistaken for something that was engineered there. That level of execution does not happen by accident. It happens because someone cared enough to make it happen, on every car, without exception.
